Navigating healthcare in the US isn’t always easy, even for someone who is familiar with the system or is fluent in English. My own sister Saamiya is an example. When she had cancer, she was misdiagnosed for 15 months, jumping from doctor to doctor. By the time she was correctly diagnosed, her cancer had spread to advanced stages. (We’re lucky my sister believed in herself enough to continue to advocate for her treatment, otherwise, she might not be with us today.)
Now what about someone who moved to the US later in their life or isn’t as comfortable in English? For older, immigrant communities, navigating an already challenging system becomes that much more difficult. And that’s even before bringing in things like medical racism and unequal access to services. This is where AACHI comes in, serving as health advocates.
AACHI helps with referrals, booking appointments, and even interpretation services. These types of services can not only improve quality of life, they can literally be life-saving. The staff at AACHI is doing phenomenal work, and they are the only non-profit of their kind in Austin that serves the Asian community.
Consider donating to AACHI today for their Give In May campaign to help meet their fundraising goals.
