A Place to Call Home: 20 Years of Community at ACA

Twenty years ago, ACA’s dream of a permanent home became reality.

Thanks to the generosity of longtime supporters Mason and Grace Yu, the Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights opened its doors. But this was never just about bricks and mortar—it was a commitment. A promise that Chinese Americans and the broader Asian American community in Metro Detroit would always have a place to gather, grow, and be seen.

Over the years, that promise has come to life:

Seniors share stories and meals in the dining hall.

Children laugh as they practice traditional dance or calligraphy.

Families reunite for Lunar New Year feasts.

Volunteers host citizenship workshops, ESL classes, and health screenings.

This center has welcomed generations—and it remains a lifeline for many.

But like any home, time leaves its mark.

The parking lot and surrounding walkways—used daily by seniors, caregivers, and families—have become cracked, uneven, and full of potholes. For older adults with mobility concerns, or parents pushing strollers, it’s not just inconvenient—it’s a safety hazard.

That’s why this year, as we celebrate 20 years of impact, ACA is launching the Community Legacy Fund—with an urgent goal of raising $30,000 to repair and resurface the parking lot and level the sidewalks.

This project will:

• Fill in dangerous potholes

• Smooth uneven pavement and sidewalks

• Create safer access for seniors and all community members
