For over two decades in non-profit development, I was told the same thing at every turn: "It’s like this everywhere." I spent 20 years navigating systems where leadership didn't look like me, speak like me, or value my lived experience. I’ve had 14 managers in my career. Only 3 were people of color. Only 2 were API.
Those numbers represent more than just a statistic; they represent two decades of being told to "fit in." But fitting in meant leaving my authentic self at the door.
Then came this past year.
After 20+ years of searching for representation, I found LEAP - or really, LEAP found me. I’ve served as our Chief Development Officer for one whole year now, and I finally stopped having to choose between my culture and my career. This year hasn’t just been a new chapter—it has been a homecoming.
By finally leading as my full API self, I feel I have made more direct impact to my community in the last 12 months than in the two decades prior. Why? Because I’m no longer using my energy to "conform." I’m using it to lead.
We are building a new way forward—one that is "for us, by us." With LEAP, I am finally moving the needle for my community in a way that is inherently, unapologetically authentic.
Will you support my campaign to change the face of leadership? Help me ensure that the next generation of API leaders doesn't have to wait 20 years to find their way home!
Thank you!
