Jakara Movement

A nonprofit organization

Jakara Movement started as an all-volunteer organization, mostly run by college students and young professionals. Since then, we have expanded to serve local communities from Sutter County to Kern County by hiring full-time community organizers. Our community organizers have grown up in the areas that they serve so they are well-equipped to assess and address the needs of their community.

As the only grassroots community based organization that serves the Punjabi community, Jakara Movement has a spectrum of initiatives and interests. We work with various groups and coalitions to amplify the voices of our collective communities. Some of the issues we work directly on include: civic engagement, education justice, health justice, immigration, language access, and racial equity.

Our goal is to develop youth leadership capacity in Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties. We do this by first engaging high school students with their local community. We currently have eight established high school chapters in Sacramento and Roseville. We give our students the tools to organize community service events themselves. We also hold discussions, town halls, and leadership trainings so the students can increase their consciousness and expand their skill set. After high school, students continue their involvement through our collegiate chapters. We currently have chapters at UC Davis, Sacramento State, and we also work with community college students. At the collegiate level, students focus more on civic engagement through advocacy and social justice through coalition-building.
