ABOUT NORTH EAST MEDICAL SERVICES (NEMS)

North East Medical Services (NEMS) is one of the largest community health centers in the U.S. targeting the medically underserved Asian population. NEMS was founded in 1968 in response to a nationwide movement to establish community-based health centers. Our mission is to provide affordable, comprehensive, compassionate, and quality health care services in a linguistically competent and culturally sensitive manner to improve the health and well-being of the community.

Over the last 50 years, we have grown from a small primary care clinic in Chinatown to a large organization of 21 clinics/sites, 3 enrollment centers, and a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) Center serving nearly 69,000 patients each year.

NEW AND EXCITING PROGRAMS AT NEMS

Internal Medicine Residency Program

NEMS is excited to announce the launch of our new Internal Medicine Residency Program! Five physicians from around the world will be joining NEMS and Seton Medical Center in summer 2023 to start their Internal Medicine Residency journey over the next three years. Our residents can speak various languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese, and Burmese. We are excited to begin this new chapter for NEMS as we continue to teach, learn, and grow!

Dental

Since joining NEMS in 2020, Dr. Nathan Yang, Dental Director, has worked tirelessly to expand dental services and bring new technological innovations to our community. For the past six years, dental services were only available at four NEMS clinics in San Francisco and San Jose. This year, we are proud to announce the opening of two new dental sites in San Francisco’s Sunset and Richmond districts, and two new clinics slated to open in San Mateo County in 2024 and 2025!

“We are happy NEMS is expanding dental services into the Sunset and Richmond districts, the convenience of seeing the dentist in this area has been great!" – NEMS Patient

Acupuncture

With a majority of our patients being Asian/Asian American, NEMS is proud to have offered Acupuncture services to our patients since the 1980s, with a relaunch of service offerings in 2016. Acupuncture and other Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) techniques enable us to provide culturally relevant, holistic care to our patients. Our Director of Integrative Medicine, Dr. Lili Qiao, has led the expansion of our Acupuncture and TCM services. Over the past six years, NEMS has grown from one Acupuncture service site to a whopping nine sites throughout the Bay Area!

Behavioral Health

NEMS Behavioral Health team is constantly seeking out innovative ways to expand and increase mental health awareness in our community. We are proud to announce that NEMS will be piloting a new Music Therapy Program for all ages later this fall!

“It has been a privilege to be able to give back to the community that raised us.” – Fan Li, NEMS Behavioral Health Manager

Hep B Microelimination Program

NEMS’ nationally recognized Immigrant Health team continues to make strides in an effort to reduce health disparities as well as improve screenings and treatment specifically for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and TB among our patient population. Since 2019, Dr. Amy Tang, Director of Immigrant Health, has set out to completely eliminate hepatitis B among our patient population. Earlier this year, NEMS and Dr. Tang were named as 2023 CDC U.S. TB Elimination Champions.

SUPPORTING OUR HEALTHCARE HEROES

Our staff have been working tirelessly on the frontlines since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, we reached a major milestone of administering 100,000+ COVID-19 doses to community members – they are truly healthcare heroes!

Today, as we move past the pandemic, we wish to thank our staff for their continuous efforts to keep our patients and communities safe and healthy. As noted above, our staff are committed to bringing new and exciting services and programs to better the communities we serve. This year, NEMS will be dedicating all proceeds from Give In May to support NEMS Employee Wellness & Appreciation programs! Your support will directly impact our staff through learning and wellness opportunities, staff luncheons, rewards, and more!

DONATION TIERS

As a thank you for your generous donation, each donor will receive recognition and/or a small token of our appreciation.

STAFF QUOTES

“I felt proud to be a part of NEMS’ Give in May campaign last year to raise funds to promote wellness in our AAPI community! I was incredibly touched by the donations from my family, friends, and fellow co-workers to support my fundraiser that helped improve existing and create new employee wellness programs at NEMS. Employee wellness has been crucial these past few years as we have all had to adapt to new circumstances brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am so thankful that NEMS placed it as a focus during last year’s Give In May campaign.” - Zinnia Dong
