Balay Kreative

Balay Kreative has invested over $100,000 to building programming that reflects the rich culture and history of Filipinx Diaspora in SoMa and the Bay Area. During this Covid-19 pandemic, Balay Kreative granted $50,000 to over 20 Bay Area-based artists.  Balay Kreative grantees tackle culturally and socially relevant issues and history. Erina Alejo’s “A Hxstory of Renting,” for example, examines the impact of a culture of gentrification and  displacement, and the resilience of the Yelamu in San Francisco. Balay Kreative also supported public art projects, such as SOMCAN and Mel Vera Cruz’s “We Live Here”. Vera Cruz aims to empower the Filipino-American community through education in the history of San Francisco’s SOMA Pilipinas.

Kapwa Gardens

Kapwa Gardens is the first public space in San Francisco designed with COVID-19 in mind to create a healing space for people to be outdoors and gather safely.
Kapwa Gardens will involve community members and the public in a number of ways. Weekly programming, hosted by local businesses and figures, will cover self-care, wellness, and self-expression.

Kapwa Gardens programs range from free Covid-19 testing to Women’s Self-Defense Training, as well as Ilokano Weaving Workshops and San Francisco’s only Plant-Based Marketplace & Festival.
