Khmer Girls in Action (KGA) is a community-based organization whose mission is to build a progressive and sustainable Long Beach community that works for gender, racial and economic justice led by Southeast Asian young women. We envision a safe, healthy and just world where all people are free from oppression and are able to determine their lives and communities.
Major KGA accomplishments and community impact:
Youth Leadership Development
We provide culturally-informed programming and rapid response resources for youth leaders to navigate systemic barriers to education, economic stability, health and safety.
Through our programs and campaigns, we have trained over 800 youth to be politically engaged community organizers who dismantle systemic oppression and advance equity
More than half of KGA’s full time staff are alumni of our programs; and 40% of staff who are alumni hold leadership and management positions
Civic Engagement
We consistently mobilize a young, progressive, multiracial voting bloc to turn out in record numbers during primary, general, and special elections
We hire alumni, transitional age youth, and community members to work as part-time seasonal canvassers who engage with up to 10,000 voters 2-3 times a year
We help pass policies that increase safety nets and public dollars; we expanded protections on statewide access to abortions and contraceptives; and we secured the first youth fund, language and living wage ordinances, decriminalized poverty and much more!
Shared Governance in Equitable Budgeting
KGA leads and anchors the Long Beach Invest in Youth Coalition and celebrates
The pilot of the first citywide youth participatory budgeting process - over 800 young people voted on summer programs to fund this year with $300K of public dollars (allocated from voter-backed Measure US)
The first Long Beach Children and Youth Fund with a dedicated funding stream that brought forth the first Office of Youth Development
A citywide survey that informed the city’s budget priorities; the first Young People’s Budget Hearing in Long Beach, and the Long Beach Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic plan, which was adopted by city council members as a blueprint on how to allocate spending for youth.
What will #GiveInMay contributions help support?
Your contributions will prepare us to launch our very first capital campaign, our biggest fundraiser yet– with the goal to move into and buy a bigger building that will meet the needs of our youth and growing community and help us launch the first Long Beach Youth Movement Center!
