Khmer Girls in Action is a community-based organization whose mission is to build a progressive and sustainable Long Beach community that works for gender, racial and economic justice led by Southeast Asian young women. We envision a safe, healthy and just world where all people are free from oppression and are able to determine their lives and communities.

Name a major accomplishment or ways that you are having impact in the community.

For over 20 years, KGA has developed socially conscious and politically active youth.  Through our programs and campaigns, we have increased their capacity to be leaders and organizers in our community who dismantle systemic oppression and advance change.

KGA first participated in Give in May in 2020.  Since then key accomplishments include:

  • The passage of local ballot Measure US to increase revenue for our city to support positive youth development, racial justice and climate resiliency programs
  • A majority vote from city council to allocate Measure US funds to establish the first Long Beach Youth Fund and an Office of Youth Development
  • A unanimous vote from city council to adopt the Long Beach Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan, a city-wide process led by KGA, the Long Beach Invest in Youth Coalition and the Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services
  • Engaging with over 10,000 voters to build a young, progressive, multi-racial, voting bloc that links communities most impacted by COVID-19 and the recession with resources to navigate this global crisis.
  • Reaching over 2,000 hard-to- count households to complete the 2020 U.S. Census
  • Recognition as 2020 CA non-profit of the year by Senator Lena Gonzalez and the California Association of Nonprofits
  • Providing culturally-sensitive programming to youth and rapid response resources to community members impacted by COVID-19

In this year of the metal ox, we will provide oversight on the implementation of the Long Beach Youth Fund and Youth Strategic Plan.  This implementation phase is rooted in strategies for civic engagement, participatory budgeting, narrative change, and youth leadership development.

We strive to model co-governance in our city where youth and community residents determine policies, and budget priorities that influence power and ensure an equitable COVID-19 recovery for communities most impacted by systemic oppression.
