Eijiro Machida, a first-generation Japanese immigrant to America, envisioned a bridge—one that would keep his children and future generations connected to the culture and traditions of their ancestral homeland. In 1936, he brought that vision to life by donating his land. From that gift, the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center (ESGVJCC) was born.
In 2026, the ESGVJCC proudly celebrates its 75th Anniversary—a milestone that honors not only its history, but the generations of families who have made it a cornerstone of community life. Many who grew up attending programs at the Center now return with their own children and grandchildren, a powerful testament to its enduring, generational impact.
Today, the ESGVJCC continues to fulfill Machida’s vision by bridging culture, family, and community. It stands as a vibrant Japanese American cultural and community hub serving the greater Los Angeles County, Inland Empire, and Orange County regions. With more than 40 cultural, educational, artistic, recreational, and social programs, the Center supports over 1,000 families of all ages and backgrounds. From youth development and enrichment programs, to senior services that foster connection and well-being, to a wide range of cultural and recreational offerings, the ESGVJCC remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of its diverse community.
Once an enclave rooted primarily within the Japanese American experience, the ESGVJCC has grown into a dynamic, outward-reaching organization. In partnership with the City of West Covina, it hosts the annual Cherry Blossom Festival and supports the Sister City relationship with Ohtawara, Japan, including a summer student exchange program. The Center also collaborates with Japanese American organizations, civic leaders, artists, schools, and community groups to create innovative and meaningful programs that serve a broad and diverse audience.
Looking ahead, the ESGVJCC reflects the rich diversity of today’s community, a deep appreciation for Japanese cultural traditions, and a strong commitment to community-based services, arts, recreation, and education.
Yet, as it was in the beginning, so it remains today. The ESGVJCC is a bridge—now open to all—to experience, celebrate, and be inspired by the beauty, uniqueness, and joy of Japanese American culture.
