RaisingHealth Partners

A nonprofit organization

Several months ago, a community member came to RaisingHealth feeling overwhelmed by stress and hopeless about life. Our licensed mental health therapist enrolled them in individual therapy, and within a few weeks, they were able to create and implement an action plan, reduce their stress, and seek more support from their community. One participant in our group therapy said they had sought mental health services through multiple avenues but were consistently rejected due to lack of insurance. After we found them a spot in our group, they expressed feeling welcomed and able to finally start their healing process.

Chinese immigrant community members just like these individuals face unique problems that can lead to mental health issues, including fears of deportation and family separation, challenges integrating into American society, losses that occurred during the COVID pandemic, and anti-Asian hate crimes. At the same time, significant cultural stigma against mental health exists within the Chinese community, preventing many individuals from identifying and treating their mental health illnesses.

For AAPI Heritage Month, we’re raising funds to combat cultural stigma, educate Chinese community members about mental health, and help them manage stress and process trauma. We provide the following free mental health services to our low-income Chinese community members:

  • Individual and group mental health counseling
  • Psychoeducation workshops
  • Destigmatization campaigns
  • Wraparound social service support

Unfortunately, our mental health program is facing a funding gap this year that could severely limit our ability to provide these services. We urgently need your help to sustain them. Donate this May to empower our Chinese community members to take care of their mental wellbeing.

About RaisingHealth Partners

RaisingHealth (formerly AMPHS) is a public health nonprofit that serves Chinese and Latino immigrant New Yorkers in South Brooklyn, many of whom are uninsured and have been denied access to healthcare because of their immigration status. We provide free services for low-income immigrants that promote community wellness, including public health outreach, preventive health screenings, mental health counseling, English literacy classes, a culturally-tailored food pantry, safety trainings, and community murals. Through our work, we affirm that healthcare is not a privilege but a basic human right.
