FIRM is a faith-based nonprofit serving refugees and immigrants in Fresno and California’s San Joaquin Valley, including Hmong, Laotian, Khmer, Slavic, Afghan, African, and Syrian communities. Through holistic programs such as community gardens, health navigation, policy work, culturally responsive organizing, and after-school programs, we address immediate needs while building long-term stability. Founded in 1994 as a partnership between refugee-led and mainstream congregations, FIRM was created to support families newly resettled in Fresno County. Today, our team of more than 50 staff includes many with lived refugee experience; combined, we speak 12 languages and bring deep cultural insight to our work. As a uniquely interdenominational organization, we provide trusted cross-cultural resources, consultation, and referrals. Since 2023, FIRM has resettled 577 refugees in partnership with the Ethiopian Community Development Council. FIRM is helping to demonstrate that the Central Valley is not only a place of welcome, but a community defined by generosity and shared responsibility.
