Who We Are
The 1990 Institute is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been active for over 35 years. While it was originally founded to facilitate constructive engagement and research-based dialogue regarding U.S.-China relations, over the years its mission has evolved and expanded to encompass education and advocacy for the Asian American community.
Today, the Institute acts as a vibrant educational and cultural hub, promoting awareness and understanding of Asian American history and supporting the aspirations of Asian American youth.

Too many Asian American youth today are shaped by social media and growing up under the weight of perfection, pressure, and a lack of belonging. They may be succeeding by society’s, and sometimes their parents’, definitions, while losing sight of who they truly are and what they hope to become.
The Roots & Wings Youth Symposium is changing that.
The 1990 Institute’s annual Roots & Wings Youth Symposium is a flagship event dedicated to empowering the next generation of Asian American leaders. Our symposium serves as a bridge between the wisdom of pioneers in our community (“trailblazers”) and the amazing potential of our youth, helping to provide inspiration, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging.
We curate an environment where students explore critical themes ranging from career pathways to cultural identity, social responsibility, and building life skills. We also offer separate breakout sessions for educators and parents, creating space for honest, intergenerational dialogue and learning. Our mission is to provide the "roots" of a strong, connected community while giving our participants the "wings" to pursue their own ambitious paths.
On September 19, 2026, the 1990 Institute will host its second Youth Symposium in San Mateo, California. We expect over 400 students, parents, and educators to attend. Your gift helps open the door for students who need this space most, equipping them with resilience, identity, and a community that believes in them.
